| A
Letter From the Executive Directors of the United Ways of Galveston
County
Before
Galveston County was devastated
by Hurricane Ike, Mainland
Communities United Way and United
Way of Galveston knew it was important to work more
closely than in the past. Despite this knowledge, we both
strictly adhered to the zip code boundaries established through
the United Way system. In
the after math of Hurricane Ike, it didn't matter what zip
code you lived in....if you needed help, you were able to
get it. This was the only way our communities were
going to survive.
It
was an awesome experience to see the care and generosity of
those within our community to help others. It was a blessing
to see the employees of social service agencies giving service
first rather than focusing on their own worries and needs.
When asked, they said "we want
to take care of other's needs first. We need to gather all
possible resources. We can take care of our needs when we
are done." Little did they know the difference
they made would last a lifetime in the eyes of others.
As
Mainland Communities United Way
and United Way of Galveston manage
their independent campaigns to raise dollars, the
collaboration can continue. The campaigns begin one
year following the storm that has changed many lives. It is
important that despite this change you continue to support
your United Way campaign.
Let's make this year's United Way
campaign the one thing that does not change with your continued
participation, volunteerism and financial support.
Remember,
underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do,
we are all people.
Connected. Interdependent.
United. And
when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition
of all. That's what it means
to Live United.
Thank
you,
Kenna
